Jump Links and Anchors on a Page

First you will create the anchors at each paragraph or line of text that the link will 'jump' to. You are not creating a link so do no select text. You are inserting a placeholder into the HTML for the system to know where to land.

Start by printing off a hard copy of your page. Beside your questions, number them 1.2.3. etc If this is an alphabetical contact list, your alphabet is already positioned across the top of the page. See UofT a-z web site list for example.

Next go through your paragraphs placing the correct letter or number beside them.

You are ready to log in and start. As you complete an anchor, cross it off your hard copy so you know where you are.

Creating anchors

Use anchors to create links to a specific location on either the same page or another page. The difference between anchors and links is that links can only jump to the top of a page whereas anchors can jump to a particular spot on a page.

Position the cursor where you want to create an anchor. This is the spot that the user will jump to. Later you will create the link that jumps to here.

Click to display the link insert dialog.

Go to the Insert Anchor tab.

Enter a Name for the anchor. What you type here will appear in the Target drop-down list on the Anchor Link tab. It will not appear on the web page.

Click Insert.

When you have returned to the page you are editing, click Save.

Repeat until all anchors have been created.

Linking to anchors

Use anchors to create links to a specific location on either the same page or another page. The difference between anchors and links is that links can only jump to the top of a page whereas anchors can jump to a particular spot on a page.

Make sure you have already inserted anchors in the locations you wish to link to.

Highlight the text that you want to turn into a link. This new link will jump to an anchor. Copy the text to paste into the Title text for the link.

Click to display the link insert dialog.

Go to the Anchor Link tab.

In the Target box, select the anchor you want this new link to jump to.

Enter the Title text for the link. This text will become the tool tip for the link.

Click Insert.

When you have returned to the page you are editing, click Save.

To change link text, right-click on the link and select Set Link Properties. On the Hyperlink tab, change the Link Text and click OK.
